Patpong

Patpong is where Bangkok’s gogo industry started (the Grand Prix opened here in 1969), and in 2026 it’s the smallest of the city’s big three districts: roughly 8–12 gogo bars across two privately-owned sois between Silom and Surawong Roads, sharing Patpong 1 with the night market that took over its sidewalks in the early 1990s. The Patpongpanich family has owned the land since 1946, and what remains of the bar trade is largely the King’s group (King’s Castle 1 and 2 on the main soi) plus Bada Bing and a handful of survivors on Patpong 2.

What’s it actually like now?

Honest answer: more market than red light. The stalls run nightly from about 6pm to midnight, which makes Patpong the easiest district to wander as a curious tourist and, counterintuitively, the cheapest of the big three to drink in: beers ฿140–190, lady drinks ฿180–240, bar fines ฿700–1,000 at 2026 prices. The decline is real: Covid killed institutions like the Madrid Bar (1969–2021), and a 2023 trafficking investigation shut a further cluster of Patpong 2 venues. But the soi has one structural advantage left: the Silom-Patpong block is one of only three areas in Bangkok licensed to serve until 4am, so its bars legally outlast Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza, which close at 2am.

The two warnings

First, the upstairs “ping-pong show” invitation is Bangkok’s most documented bill scam: if you must look, agree every price at the door; better, stay at street level. Second, ignore guides pointing you to the Patpong Museum: it closed in May 2023 and the building is gone.

BTS Sala Daeng is a three-minute walk, MRT Si Lom about five. Go before 9pm for the market, after for the bars.
